Seychelles National Museum of History receives scale model of legendary Russian cruiser “Varyag”
On 20 December 2021, the Russian Embassy in Seychelles donated to the Seychelles National Museum of History a scale model of the legendary Russian protected cruiser “Varyag”, which became famous for her crew's stoicism in combat.
Later on, during WW1, in 1916, en route from the Far East to the Arctic, the famous cruiser called on the port of Victoria. The crew received a warm welcome on the island of Mahe, thus expanding friendly ties between the peoples of Russia and Seychelles.
The official handover ceremony marked the 105th anniversary of this historic event. The model, which will be included into the permanent exposition of the Museum, will contribute to the preservation of the memory of interesting and important chapters of the archipelago’s history and Russia-Seychelles bilateral relations.
The ceremony was attended by H.E. Mr. Wavel Ramkalawan, President of the Republic, Mr. Sylvestre Radegonde, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Brigadier Michael Rosette, Chief of Seychelles Defence Forces, Mr. David Andre, Mayor of Victoria and Secretary General of the Seychelles National Institute of Culture, Heritage and the Arts, who received the donation on behalf of the Seychelles side.
